Active Shooter in Drill at Wrigley Field Tests Emergency Response

Shooter simulation held late last week

Chicago authorities and the Chicago Cubs collaborated in a simulation last week that tested emergency response to an active shooter at the ballpark.

The simulation, which lasted approximately 7 hours, served to test emergency response to active shooter incident at the Cubs’ park, Wrigley Field. One of the main roads surrounding the ballpark, Waveland Avenue was closed for hours during the exercise.

In addition to members of the Cubs organization, the Chicago Police Department, Chicago Fire Department, and the Office of Emergency Management and Communications also participated in the drill.

According to Chicago’s WGN, more than [link url=”http://wgntv.com/2016/07/14/mock-shooting-drill-taking-place-at-wrigley-field-today/” title=”100 police recruits posed as fans”] during the active shooter drill, while members of Chicago Police, the Chicago Fire Department and members of other connected organizations responded as necessary. Some of the mock fans faked being shot or otherwise getting injured to further the testing exercise.

The simulation took place during Major League Baseball’s All-Star break, as teams were off and the ballpark wasn’t in use.

Mock disaster exercises serve a purpose

The Wrigley Field exercise is the just the latest in a number of emergency response simulations that take place across the U.S. each year. For example, Vermont is currently [link url=”https://amuedge.com/vermont-prepping-for-major-mock-disaster-drill/” title=”prepping for major mock disaster drill”], while in June, a [link url=”https://amuedge.com/cascadia-rising-to-test-pnw-megaquake-response/” title=”massive emergency response”] exercise known as Cascadia Rising took place in the Pacific Northwest in an effort to test response to a mega-earthquake in the region.
