DoD Invites Specialists to ‘Hack the Pentagon’

Specialists will attempt to hack DoD pages

The Department of Defense (DoD) announced that it is launching a program that will encourage cyber security specialists to hack into DoD web pages.

Labeled “Hack the Pentagon,” the program will offer vetted computer security professionals the chance to exploit vulnerabilities in the public pages on the DoD website.

Ultimately, the DoD says, this exercise will strengthen its digital defenses.

First ever cyber bug bounty program tied to the federal government

“Hack the Pentagon” will be the first cyber bug bounty program ever offered by the federal government. This type of bug bounty program is relatively commonplace in the public sector — one website currently lists [link url=”http://bugsheet.com/directory” title=”more than 360 bug bounty programs“] available to the public — but is new territory for the federal government.

Only vetted participants allowed

In order to take part in the hacking program, participants will have to register and submit to a background check.

Once a participant is vetted, he/she will be able to get to work attempting to discover vulnerabilities on a specific system for a limited duration. Which live asset DoD officials will allow hackers to target has not yet been specified.

The pilot program will launch in April.
