EDM Friday Briefing: Chilean Town Destroyed, Doomsday Clock, Deputies Shot

Emergency and disaster management briefing for Friday, January 27, 2017:

  1. A town in Chile has been destroyed by [link url=”http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-latin-america-38766681″ title=”the country’s worst wildfire in modern history”]. A series of fires are being fanned by strong winds, high temperatures and drought. International help has been arriving including super-tanker aircraft from the U.S. and Russia, both capable of carrying tons of water to douse the fires. At least four firefighters and two police officers have been killed fighting the blaze.
  2. Atomic scientists have [link url=”http://www.reuters.com/article/us-science-doomsdayclock-idUSKBN15A2JJ” title=”rolled forward the Doomsday Clock”] (an indicator of the world’s vulnerability to disaster) to its closest time to midnight in 64 years on Thursday, saying the world was closer to catastrophe due to threats such as nuclear weapons, climate change and Donald Trump’s election as U.S. president. The clock was last set this close to midnight in 1953, marking the start of the nuclear arms race between the United States and the Soviet Union.
  3. Two Mississippi sheriff’s deputies are recovering after [link url=”http://www.foxnews.com/us/2017/01/26/2-mississippi-sheriffs-deputies-wounded-in-shootout-suspect-killed.html” title=”being wounded in a shootout with a suspect”] Wednesday night. One deputy was reportedly struck in the chest and suffered damage to the lungs among other organs.   4. Federal disaster assistance has been made available to the states of Georgia and Oregon to supplement State and local recovery efforts in the areas affected by severe weather. Storms, tornadoes, and straight-line winds battered Georgia during the period of Jan. 21-22, 2017, while severe storms resulted in flooding for Oregon in December.
  5. Lives and homes are being threatened by an [link url=”http://www.sbs.com.au/news/article/2017/01/26/emergency-warning-second-wa-bushfire” title=”out of control and unpredictable bush fire”] in Western Australia. Authorities have issued an emergency warning, saying that homes in the region were under threat by fire. As the babies grow, they can develop abnormalities such as fluid on the brain. A warming shelter has been set up and is being staffed by Red Cross volunteers. The Navajo Nation Council has approved $242,000 [link url=”http://www.dailyprogress.com/navajo-nation-council-approves-k-for-emergency-services/article_e94838f3-271a-55eb-a81d-6a2ac609a85a.html” title=”for emergency response services”] after recent heavy snow on the vast reservation at Window Rock, Arizona. Council members say the tribe currently has less than $10,000 for emergency services.
