Emergency and disaster management briefing for August 12, 2016: A three-year-old boy falls off a roller coaster in PA, explosions rattle Thailand, a Mississippi woman is sentenced 12 years after attempting to join ISIS, researchers find unsafe tap water across the U.S., Delta flight delays continue, and a San Francisco utility giant is found guilty in a 2010 pipeline explosion.

A young boy from Pennsylvania tumbled off of the [link url=”http://pix11.com/2016/08/11/accident-at-idlewild-amusement-park/” title=”Rollo Coaster”]  ride at a popular theme park in Ligonier, PA. [link url=”http://www.post-gazette.com/local/westmoreland/2016/08/11/Idlewild-for-reports-of-child-who-fell-from-roller-coaster-pennsylvania/stories/201608110188/” title=”Police are investigating”] how the 3-year-old boy fell. Prior to being transported to a local hospital, the boy was able to communicate with his family and was alert. No injury report is available at this time.
  2.  [link url=”http://www.wsj.com/articles/twin-bombings-rattle-beach-resort-in-thailand-1470949118/” title=”Thailand officials “] reported explosions that shook a resort late Thursday, leaving [link url=”http://www.wsj.com/articles/twin-bombings-rattle-beach-resort-in-thailand-1470949118/” title=”one person dead and another 10 injured”]. The Hua Hin resort is a popular resort for foreign tourists. No leads have been confirmed as of yet by investigators.

A Mississippi woman accused of [link url=”http://www.foxnews.com/us/2016/08/11/mississippi-woman-sentenced-to-12-years-for-trying-to-join-isis-in-trip-disguised-as-honeymoon.html” title=”seeking to join ISIS “] has been sentenced to 12 years in prison. In March, Jaelyn Young pleaded guilty to the charges, and could have been sentenced to up to 20 years in prison.
  4. Harvard’s Chan School of Public Health [link url=”https://amuedge.com/researchers-find-unsafe-drinking-water-in-33-states/” title=”released a new joint study”] that found high levels of industrial chemicals, including poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), in tap water across the U.S. PFASs have direct ties to cancer and [link url=”https://amuedge.com/researchers-find-unsafe-drinking-water-in-33-states/” title=”other health issues”]. The researchers said that at least 6 million people in 33 states are exposed to unsafe drinking water. The EPA is currently reviewing the report.
  5.  [link url=”http://www.freep.com/story/travel/2016/08/11/delta-flight-delays-detroit-metro/88555142/” title=”Delta flights “] are still experiencing delays in the Detroit Metro area. As of yesterday evening, there were 34 delays which ranged from 15 minutes to more than four hours. It was discovered the cause of the initial delays were due to a cascading power and computer outage.
  6.  A grand jury [link url=”http://www.sfexaminer.com/pge-convicted-six-12-charges-criminal-pipeline-safety-trial/” title=”convicted a utility company”] on 11 counts of violating pipeline safety laws and obstructing a probe into the fatal 2010 pipeline explosion in San Bruno, CA. The aftermath of the blast resulted in eight deaths and dozens injured. The utility giant faces a $500,000 per count fine, or $3 million in total fines for six guilty counts.
  7. Roughly two million people are currently at risk in Syria due to cuts in power and water. The United Nations is [link url=”http://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-37021305″ title=”calling for a halt in fighting”] until the water and power are restored to civilians. The UN is also advising these civilians are at [link url=”http://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-37021305″ title=”grave risk” of disease”].
