EDM Monday Briefing: Ongoing Drought, Shootings, Explosions, A Student Found

 Sao Paulo’s Drought Continues

The severe drought in Sao Paulo, Brazil is not easing.  The [link url=”http://www.npr.org/sections/parallels/2015/11/22/455751848/as-brazils-largest-city-struggles-with-drought-residents-are-leaving” title=”drought in southeast Brazil”] began about three years ago and shows no sign of ending.  [link url=”http://www.trust.org/item/20151030184853-66fu4/?source=leadCarousel” title=”Reservoirs are drying up”] and water rationing is now a normal way of life for residents.  Rio de Janeiro and other coastal cities are also experiencing water shortages, something that most residents never thought would occur.  Unfortunately, [link url=”http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/IOTD/view.php?id=85406″ title=”data from NASA satellites”] paint an even worse picture of the ongoing drought conditions.  Some [link url=”http://www.npr.org/sections/parallels/2015/11/22/455751848/as-brazils-largest-city-struggles-with-drought-residents-are-leaving” title=”ecologists are attributing the drought”] to the destruction of the Amazon Rain Forest, while others blame poor city planning.  Whatever the reason, many residents of Sao Paulo are choosing to uproot and move to locations where water is plentiful.

Shooting Violence in New Orleans

New Orleans was the [link url=”http://www.foxnews.com/us/2015/11/23/at-least-10-injured-in-shooting-at-new-orleans-playground-during-party-after/” title=”scene of violence late Sunday night”] when a dispute occurred in a 9th ward playground.  Police indicated that around 500 people were at the park to make a music video, but did not have a permit.  After becoming aware of the gathering, police were en route, and nearby, to disperse the crowd when the shots began.  It appears that 16 people have been injured and taken to area hospitals, but there have been no reported deaths.

Officer Shot in St. Louis, MO

A police officer was [link url=”http://fox2now.com/2015/11/22/st-louis-police-officer-shot-in-north-st-louis/” title=”shot late Sunday evening in St. Louis, MO”].   The officer has only been on patrol for about a month, according to police department officials.  He was shot in the shoulder after struggling with a suspect who has since been taken into custody.  The police officer’s injury is not life threatening and he was transported to a local hospital.

Explosion at the Yasukuni Shrine in Japan

The Yasukuni Shrine in Japan is the scene of over [link url=”http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/explosion-reported-japans-controversial-yasukuni-shrine-35364989″ title=”100 first responders including firefighters”] and investigators Monday morning, as officials attempt to determine what caused an explosion in the bathroom.  No injuries occurred, although damages to the walls and ceiling are being reported.  This controversial landmark honors soldiers who are considered to be war criminals by some nations and has created divisions and political tensions both inside and outside of Japan in the past.  Today was a national holiday, which may have contributed to the alleged attack.

Washington College Student Found

Jacob Marberger, the Washington College student who went missing on November 16, has been found.  [link url=”http://www.foxnews.com/us/2015/11/22/maryland-student-who-prompted-closure-campus-found-dead/” title=”Police found the college sophomore”] on Saturday, in a nature preserve approximately 80 miles from his parents’ Philadelphia home where he lived.  It is believed that he died of a gunshot would that was self-inflicted.  Classes are set to resume after the Thanksgiving break, on November 30.

Kimberly Arsenault serves as an intern at the Cleveland/Bradley County Emergency Management Agency where she works on plan revisions and special projects. Previously, Kimberly spent 15 years in commercial and business aviation. Her positions included station manager at the former Midwest Express Airlines, as well as corporate flight attendant, inflight manager, and charter flight coordinator. Kimberly currently holds a master's degree in emergency and disaster management from American Public University.
