EDM Monday Briefing: Tropical Depression, Airline Pilots Arrested, Plane Crash in New Orleans

Emergency and disaster management briefing for August 29, 2016: Tropical depression 8 develops off of the East Coast, two United Airlines pilots are arrested on alcohol charges, two people go missing after a plane crashes in a New Orleans lake, Iran deploys a Russian-made long range missile, an Ithaca College student is stabbed, a fatal bus crash occurs in Louisiana, Zika arrives in Singapore, a biofuels study sparks debate, and California fire officials attempt to contain the Sobernanes, Chimney, and Rey wildfires.

  1. Tropical depression 8 [link url=”http://www.usatoday.com/story/weather/2016/08/28/tropical-depression-storms-hurricanes-gulf-coast-hermine/89506808/” title=”formed off of the coast of North Carolina,”] less than 300 miles southeast of Cape Hatteras, N.C. The system, which could develop into a tropical storm, is expected to impact eastern North Carolina early this week
  2. United Airlines (UA) is under fire after [link url=”http://www.cbsnews.com/news/2-united-airlines-pilots-arrested-for-suspected-drunkenness-glasgow-airport/” title=”two UA pilots were arrested”] for suspected intoxication before they were to fly passengers from Scotland to the United States. The flight was delayed for 10 hours while the airline sought replacement pilots. No information was available on how authorities found out that both men were intoxicated.
  3. A Cessna aircraft [link url=”http://www.foxnews.com/us/2016/08/28/one-person-rescued-2-missing-after-new-orleans-plane-crash.html” title=”crashed into a New Orleans lake”] Sunday morning. A woman was rescued after the crash but two men are still missing. The rescued woman’s medical condition unknown at this time.
  4. Tehran deployed [link url=”https://www.yahoo.com/news/iran-deploys-long-range-missiles-fordo-nuclear-213812868.html” title=”Russian-made long range missiles”] to defend its Fordo nuclear facility. Images of the move were aired over state television after supreme leader gave a speech to stress Iranian military power was for defensive purposes only. Iran has already dismantled most of its 19,000 centrifuges.
  5. An Ithaca College student was [link url=”http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/ithaca-college-student-fatally-stabbed-cornell-fight-article-1.2768943″ title=”fatally stabbed”] after a large fight broke out on Cornell campus. Anthony Nazaire died at the hospital while another student was treated for stab wounds. This is the first homicide at Ithaca in five years.
  6. Louisiana officials advised that [link url=”http://abcnews.go.com/US/killed-41-injured-crash-involving-unlicensed-bus-driver/story?id=41703681″ title=”two people were killed and 41 were injured”] in a charter bus crash in the state. Officials stated that the driver, Denis Yasmir Amaya Rodriguez, is in the U.S. illegally from Honduras and [link url=”http://abcnews.go.com/US/killed-41-injured-crash-involving-unlicensed-bus-driver/story?id=41703681″ title=”does not have a license”]. One of those killed was the fire chief from St. John the Baptist Fire Department.

Approximately 40 locals in Singapore [link url=”http://abcnews.go.com/Health/wireStory/locally-transmitted-zika-virus-infects-41-singapore-41699004″ title=”contracted Zika virus.”] Officials said that most of those with the virus have recovered. A 48-year-old man who traveled to Zika ridden Brazil imported the virus. Zika has mild effects on most people, but is associated with birth defects in unborn children.

A new study released by the University of Michigan’s Energy Institute analyzed the net increase in [link url=”https://amuedge.com/biofuels-vs-fossil-fuels-new-study-heats-up-climate-debate/” title=” carbon emissions by clean biofuels.”] The study sparked strong reactions and heated debate between biofuel and fossil fuel advocates.
  9. The three-headed monster that has [link url=”http://wildfiretoday.com/tag/california/” title=”scorched parts of California is still burning.”] The [link url=”http://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/4888/” title=”Soberanes fire”] has blackened over 91,000 acres, the [link url=”http://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/4971/” title=”Rey fire”] has burnt 33,006 acres, and the [link url=”http://www.sanluisobispo.com/news/local/article98318197.html” title=”Chimney fire”] has cleared 45,000 acres. Hot shots are still on scene for all three fires.
