EDM Wednesday Briefing: Officers Shot, Schools Locked Down, Pipeline Explodes

  1. Two police officers were shot and killed overnight just blocks from each other after responding to calls in the [link url=”http://abcnews.go.com/US/police-officers-shot-killed-ambush-attack-iowa/story?id=43238960″ title=”Urbandale suburb of Des Moines, Iowa”]. Police are describing the incidents as ambush-style attacks since both officers were shot while sitting in their police cars. According to police, there appears to have been no interaction between the officers and the suspect. The police department of about fifty has [link url=”http://www.kcci.com/article/breaking-two-officers-shot-overnight/8089441″ title=”doubled up their officers in an effort to ensure their safety”] as the investigation and search for the suspect continues.
  2. A man pulled a [link url=”http://www.nj.com/monmouth/index.ssf/2016/11/monmouth_university_on_lockdown_after_report_of_ar.html” title=”gun on two students at Monmouth University in New Jersey on Tuesday night”], prompting a campus-wide lockdown. [link url=”https://www.monmouth.edu/templates/NewsDetail.aspx?id=40802212058″ title=”According to the school’s website”], after pulling the gun and demanding their cellphones, the girls ran to a nearby building and called 911. [link url=”http://www.wsj.com/articles/monmouth-university-in-lockdown-after-gun-incident-1478058107″ title=”Multiple law enforcement agencies responded”], including the campus police department, and a lockdown was initiated. The suspect was apprehended around 10:26 p.m., but the lockdown continued until almost midnight while authorities searched for the weapon.
  3. [link url=”http://www.wbrc.com/story/33580740/farley-nuclear-plant-near-dothan-declares-alert” title=”Officials issued an alert”] Tuesday at the Joseph M. Farley Nuclear Power Plant in Dothan, Alabama, following a detected ammonia leak in a Unit 1 vital area. The leak prompted an alert, [link url=”http://www.nrc.gov/about-nrc/emerg-preparedness/about-emerg-preparedness/emerg-classification.html” title=”the second least serious according to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission”], and posed no threat to the public. The alert was issued around 5:45 p.m. and canceled around 8:30 p.m. after the source of the leak was identified.

[link url=”http://vancouversun.com/news/local-news/two-abbotsford-schools-on-lockdown-after-double-stabbing” title=”Two students were stabbed”] at Abbotsford Secondary Senior in British Colombia, Canada on Tuesday afternoon. According to police, the knife-wielding suspect did not appear to be a student at the school. The attacker was apprehended and subdued by school staff before police arrived, which authorities believe helped prevent further injuries. The school, and the attached Abbotsford Middle School, were placed on lockdown while [link url=”http://www.abbynews.com/news/399548851.html” title=”police conducted a search”] for other suspects or victims.
  5. In the Pacific Northwest, the [link url=”https://amuedge.com/university-of-washington-launches-new-disaster-response-center/” title=”University of Washington is set to launch a new effort”] meant to improve disaster response in the area. The mission of the new disaster response effort is to deploy teams directly after a hazard event occurs, such as an earthquake or severe weather, to assess road and building damages incurred. The teams [link url=”https://amuedge.com/university-of-washington-launches-new-disaster-response-center/” title=”will use state-of-the-art surveying and imaging tools”] from an engineering approach in order to investigate the damages.
  6. Late Tuesday night, the [link url=”http://pix11.com/2016/11/01/graphic-video-shows-deadly-shootout-with-oklahoma-fugitive-michael-vance/” title=”Oklahoma Highway Patrol released graphic video of the shootout with Michael Vance”], the individual suspected in a double-homicide that occurred on October 23, 2016. The shootout occurred late Sunday night, after Vance had allegedly shot the sheriff in an altercation that happened about thirty minutes prior. The shootout followed a high speed chase, involved five troopers, and a helicopter. [link url=”http://kfor.com/2016/11/01/graphic-ohp-release-videos-that-show-deadly-shootout-with-michael-vance/” title=”Three other suspects were also arrested for allegedly assisting Vance”] in acquiring weapons and providing him medical care while he was on the run: Reginald Moore, Danny Roach, and April Harden Roach.
  7. In Baltimore, MD, [link url=”http://baltimore.cbslocal.com/2016/11/01/mta-bus-crashes-with-school-bus-in-southwest-baltimore/” title=”an MTA bus and a school bus collided Tuesday morning”], leaving six dead and ten hospitalized. There were no children on the school bus at the time of the crash. Both bus drivers were killed in the accident, and authorities are still investigating what caused the school bus to strike a Mustang car, then a Louden Park Cemetery Pillar before colliding with the No. 10 MTA bus.

On Monday afternoon, a construction crew [link url=”http://www.wsj.com/articles/gas-diesel-prices-spike-following-alabama-pipeline-fire-1478010889″ title=”hit a gas pipeline in Helena, AL”], sparking an explosion and fire that killed one crew member and injured five others. The pipeline carries gasoline from Houston to New York, prompting fears of another gas price increase due to its shutdown for repairs. This is the [link url=”http://money.cnn.com/2016/11/01/news/colonial-pipeline-fire-gas-prices/” title=”second incident in two months on the same pipeline”] – the previous leak also occurred in Shelby County, Alabama, just a few miles away.  The [link url=”https://helena.colonialresponse.com/” title=”Colonial Pipeline Co. issued a statement”] expressing their concern for the families affected by the incident and noted the line will likely remain closed for at least the remainder of the week.
