Mar. 11--An Ethiopian Airlines plane that crashed Sunday morning was identified by the airline as a Boeing 737 Max 8, the same model operated by Lion Air that crashed off Indonesia in October 2018.
In response, Ethiopian Airlines grounded its fleet of Max 8s on Monday, saying, "Although we don't yet know the cause of the accident, we had to decide to ground the particular fleet as (an) extra safety precaution."
China did the same and said it would consult with the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration and Boeing, while Cayman Airlines said it would temporarily ground both of its 737 Max 8s.
According to Boeing, China Air took delivery of its first 737 Max 8 back in November 2017.
Here is some background about the plane and how you might know if you're flying on one:
What is the Boeing 737 Max 8?
The Boeing 737 Max 8 is a passenger planethat is part of the 737 MAX family. According to Boeing, the fleet was designed to follow in the footsteps of the 787 Dreamliner, 767 and 757.
According to FlightGlobal, Malaysian carrier Malindo Air flew the world's first Boeing 737 Max 8 commercial flight on May 22, 2017.
The first Max 8 flight in the U.S. came via Southwest Airlines on Oct. 1, 2017.
How many MAX airplanes are there?
Boeing's website says it has taken more than 5,000 total orders for the latest generation of 737s, but many are backlogged despite a firm contractual commitment.
Which U.S. airlines are flying the 737 Max aircraft?
According to CBS News, there are at least 69 737 Max planes in service across Southwest Airlines, American Airlines and United Airlines. As of Dec. 31, Southwest Airlines had 31 Max 8 aircraft, and American had 24.
American and United Airlines routinely fly in and out of Lehigh Valley International Airport, but airport spokesman Colin Riccobon said there are no 737 series aircraft operating out of LVIA.
A sample of departing flights for today's date indicate the planes most in use are the Canadair CRJ-900.
Allegiant Air, the airport's biggest airline partner, operates a fleet of 81 planes in 110 U.S. cities -- a mix of the Airbus A319 and Airbus A320.
How would I know if I'm flying on a Max 8?
You can use a site like SeatGuru to look up your plane, or you can browse from 1,173 aircraft spanning 157 airlines.
On board the plane, you can usually find more about the plane in a brochure tucked in pocket of your seat.
Has Boeing said anything about the safety of the aircraft?
After the Lion Air crash last fall, Boeing issued a bulletin saying the Max 8's anti-stall sensor could produce "erroneous indications," causing the plane's nose to dive.
On Sunday, Boeing said in a statement it was "deeply saddened to learn of the passing of the passengers and crew on Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302, a 737 MAX 8 airplane." Boeing extended sympathies to the families and loved ones of the passengers and crew and said a technical team would be travelling to the crash site to provide technical assistance under the direction of the Ethiopia Accident Investigation Bureau and U.S. National Transportation Safety Board.
