Discussing suicide and mental health issues is difficult for those who are struggling, especially when no resources seem easily available. All too often, society is quick to judge and blame not only those who commit suicide, but the people around them.

Start a degree program at American Public University.

Award-winning student organization Active Minds is dedicated to suicide prevention and mental health awareness, providing nonjudgmental resources for the people they help. In this video, faculty advisor Dr. Kimberlee Ratliff and chapter leaders Heidi Stream and Rhiannon Brown discuss the work of this organization.

About the Speakers

Dr. Kimberlee Ratliff holds an Ed.D. in Counseling Psychology, M.Ed. in School Counseling, and B.S. in Psychology. She has been with APUS since September 2010 and is an Associate Professor and Program Director of School Counseling & Student Affairs. She is a National Certified Counselor (NCC), a National Certified School Counselor (NCSC), a K-12 Certified School Counselor (VA), and a Trauma and Loss School Specialist with 12 years of experience as an elementary and middle school counselor.

Heidi Stream is an Urban Park Ranger and Biological Science Technician with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. She holds four associate degrees from the Defense Language Institute, Cochise College and the Community College of the Air Force; a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from American Military University; a bachelor’s degree in Marine Sciences from Jacksonville University; and a master’s degree in Environmental Policy and Management with a concentration in Fish and Wildlife Management from American Military University.

Rhiannon Brown is a curriculum developer, writer, editor and language specialist with the Defense Language Institute. She is also the owner of Knowledg3zpoweR!, an organization dedicated to helping others recognize and cope with Internet predators. Rhiannon has an associate degree in Liberal Arts and Sciences from Riverside Community College; a bachelor’s degree in Liberal Arts and Sciences from California State University – San Bernandino; and a master’s degree in English Composition and Applied Linguistics for Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL). She is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Legal Studies from American Military University.
