The Battle of Gettysburg

Interpreting the bloodiest battle of the Civil War
Tuesday, May 18, 2010 – 11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. ET

Known as the bloodiest battle in the Civil War, the Battle of Gettysburg became the war’s turning point for the Union as Maj. Gen. Gordon Meade fended off Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee’s invasion of the North. Spread out over three days of fighting characterized by heavy cavalry charges, massive infantry assaults, and aggressive tactics; the Battle of Gettysburg represents the climax of the Civil War and its everlasting impression on American history.

Aside from the severe loss of life on the battlefield, what about Gettysburg led to its notoriety and how do interpretations by historians and scholars impact how Americans view the battle? What are the implications of calling it a “decisive victory” for the Union and how were both sides of the war impacted by this costly battle?

Join American Military University and the Weider History Group for this live event that will bring to light aspects of the Battle of Gettysburg ranging from the importance of the battle, to our memory of the Civil War, to how the battle is still being fought as Americans debate various interpretations of the battlefield.
