Subway Attack in Belarus

By William Tucker
A rare terrorist attack struck Minsk, the Belarusian capital, today killing eleven and wounding well over a hundred more. The bombing occurred just before 6 p.m. in the Oktyabrskaya subway station not far from the Presidential palace and residence. At this time details of the damage caused by the blast have been limited and the type of explosive device that was used in the attack have not been released. With so few details to work with we’ll have to keep an eye on the situation to ascertain what exactly happened and who was responsible. Belarus does have several nationalist groups and more radical elements of key opposition parties do have an incentive to cause chaos. There is no evidence that this was perpetrated by Jihadist elements, and although they haven’t struck Belarus in the past, we cannot discount them yet either. The video, available after the jump, is in Russian, but it gives us a few useful details about the breadth of the damage to the subway station.
