Weather Disasters in U.S. Impacted Millions in Past Five Years

57 million Americans hit by at least 5 disasters in last 5 years

A new report from Environment Virginia examined the prevalence of declared disasters both in the state of Virginia and across the U.S. during the past five years.

The citizen-based environmental advocacy organization put together an [link url=”http://www.environmentvirginia.org/page/vae/extreme-weather-map” title=”interactive online map“] utilizing federal government data that visualizes the number of disasters experienced by different regions of the country in the recent past.

In the state of Virginia, 91 percent (112 of 133) cities and counties have been impacted by weather disasters in recent months.

One of the latest disasters came from Winter Storm Jonas, which dumped [link url=”https://weather.com/storms/winter/news/winter-storm-jonas-rank-in-history” title=”more than three feet of snow“] in parts of the state from January 22-24, 2016.

According to Environment Virginia, more than 57 million residents in the U.S. have been impacted by at least five weather-related disasters in the past five years.

Additionally, 97 percent of the nationwide population lives in counties that experienced a declared disaster at least once in that same time frame.
